Hon. PM Bainimarama Hands Over Cheque to the Mataqali Vunilolo, Nuku Village, Tailevu

Hon. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama handed over a cheque of $273,000.00 to the Mataqali of Vunilolo from the village of Nuku, Tailevu in his office today. The Mataqali gave their land to be leased under the Land Bank to allow the extension of the Nausori Airport runway by the Fiji Airports Limited.

The Hon Prime Minister Bainimarama speaking in iTaukei expressed his appreciation to the clan for their support and giving their land to allow this development to take place especially in assisting Government in modernising Fiji.

“The runaway in Nausori airport is currently small for 737 planes that take off from Nausori in can only take limited load however by accessing this land the runaway will now be extended to 2,100 metres.”

Those were the remarks of the Attorney General and Minister for Civil Aviation Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stating that this is an historic occasion for both parties in allowing the leasing of the land which will contribute to the economic growth and development of Nausori and also create employment opportunities for the members of the community.

“This will mean that Fiji Airports Limited will use $60million to lengthen the runaway it will be compliant with International standards and this allows for more aircraft landing with more safety procedures in place.”

According to the Turaga ni Mataqali Vunilolo, Josega Rainima in 2013 the 10 acre land was gazetted and their hope in Government was worth the wait. “We would like to thank government for their support and receiving this amount is a blessing.”
