Hon. PM’s Speech at the Civic Lunch hosted by Mayor of Liverpool City, Sydney- (25:10:19)

Mayor Wendy Waller and the Councillors of Liverpool City Council;

Ms Kiersten Fishburn, CEO of Council and the Executive Management Team.

 I want to thank you for the kind gesture and hospitality extended to me, my wife Mary and my delegation from Fiji at this lunch. I have enjoyed visiting Liverpool on several occasions over the past few years.

That you have taken time to host me today at this Lunch is very generous of you and the Council and indeed very much appreciated by myself and my delegation.

There are many Fijians living in this locality. It is one of the major reasons I have frequented the Liverpool area – to celebrate Fiji Independence Day with the Fijian diaspora community in Sydney and wider NSW, as well as from around the country.

Thank you for your continuous support over the past 5 years towards our national Independence Day celebration. We certainly look forward to the Liverpool City Council support to similar events in the future and next year in particular, when Fiji will celebrate its 50th Independence Anniversary.

Fijians who live here in Liverpool and Sydney have made significant contributions to our national development. One objective of my visit each year is to thank them but also encourage them to do more.

Indeed, Fiji has a lot to benefit and learn from the extensive growth and development that have taken place in the Liverpool area. Your infrastructure development is commendable and I believe that partnership in this sector and other areas would be very useful for us.

Perhaps in my next visit to New South Wales, I hope to see the progress of the 2nd Sydney Airport at Badgeree Creek.

Thank you once again and Vinaka vakalevu!
