About 3800 Fijians in Tailevu now have access to safe and clean drinking water following the commissioning of the Namau Water Treatment Plant by the Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.
At the commissioning, the Prime Minister said the new plant is saving Fiji $50,000 annually in water carting costs alone.
“Whether its lighting your homes and schools or reliably supplying you with clean water, my Government is committed to providing Namau and every other community in Fiji with a solid foundation of essential services upon which you and your young people can build,” Prime Minister Bainimarama said.
“By 2030, we expect every Fijian to have reliable access to safe, drinking water much like what the Namau water project now supplies to Korovou Town, five of its surrounding villages, three schools and three farming communities.”
The new plant includes a five-mega litre reservoir, 21 kilometres of new pipelines and accompanying electrical infrastructure.
The Fijian Government has also identified 12 villages, six settlements, seven schools and two more farming communities in Vunilagi and Waidalice for the water plant project. Piping extension works will soon begin to connect these identified areas to the more than $20 million water plant.
