Macuata- The Prime Minister, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama concluded his three day tour of the Northern Division yesterday visiting the islands of Kia, Galoa, Tavea and Yaqaga in the provinces of Bua and Macuata.
Yaro Village was one of the “worst-hit” villages in Vanua Levu during Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
The villagers had a “talanoa” with the Prime Minister today and directly sought his assistance on the provision of adequate water supply, more food supplies, fishing gears and assistance to rebuild damaged homes.
The villagers of Yaro on Kia Island, Tavea, Galoa and Yaqaga are forever grateful to the Fijian Government, Australian Defence Force and other relevant agencies and international organisations for their immediate response following the devastating aftermath of TC Yasa.
Prime Minister Bainimarama told the villagers that they would be prioritizing the supply of essential items such as fishing gears as most of the villagers depend on fishing for their livelihoods and also providing adequate water supply and food rations.
He also encouraged parents not to stress too much about their children’s school uniforms as affected students can attend school in non-uniform attire.
Today, the Prime Minister also visited Tavea Island where seven houses were totally destroyed and 10 partially-damaged.
Village headman Josevata Veibete said the Prime Minister’s visit meant a lot and was a sign of renewed hope for them.
“We are very happy indeed to have the Prime Minister in our village. We raised our issues and requests and we are delighted that relevant authorities will look into it. Thank you very much Prime Minister Bainimarama and the Fijian Government and also to all those who have stepped in during our darkest times of need.”
