As part of efforts to promote environmental stewardship and supporting the Peoples’ Coalition Government’s initiatives for a cleaner and greener Fiji, the Eco Guardians of Fiji organised a clean-up campaign at Qauia Settlement in Lami this afternoon.
With the support of the Embassies of Japan and the U.S, the Seventh Day Adventist Church and relevant authorities, the event saw participation from local community members, volunteers and environmental advocates joining hands to create a clean and safe community.
The participants combed through the designated route from Qauia Settlement to Tikaram Park, collecting waste and recyclable materials.
Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna, was part of the event and had the opportunity to express his appreciation to the organisers for the worthy cause.
“We need greater partnership and collaboration in order to achieve our sustainable development goals, renewable energy goals and enacting our climate change mitigation measures,” he told those in attendance.
“The Fiji Government will welcome whatever help it can get when it comes to environmental protection and safeguarding our beloved country for the generations to come.”
The event was also graced by the crew members of the visiting frigate, JS NOSHIRO, who helped with picking up rubbish.
To the crew, Hon. Tubuna acknowledged their participation, saying their involvement is a beacon of hope as they extend their hearts and pride in nature and caring for the environment to the people of Fiji.
The Assistant Minister also thanked Eco Guardians of Fiji for the initiative, which aligns closely with the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance waste management practices, promote climate resilience, and maintain the cleanliness of our communities.
Japanese Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency,Mr Rokuichiro Michii, congratulated the participants, saying they are the real champions and environment warriors.
Commenting on the participation of the crew members of the JS NOSHIRO, he said that the ship, which is also carrying a group of US Coast Guard personnel, is in Fiji to help develop better understanding of maritime capabilities.
“The visit of JS NOSHIRO also aspires to strengthen the drive for environment conservation and how it can be achieved through cooperation between entities, communities and nations,” he highlighted.
The event concluded with a few displays and performances that promoted environmental stewardship.
