In the heart of Fiji’s public service stands a man whose dedication and perseverance have not only earned him the respect of his peers but also a historic civil service medal.
Meet George Katonivualiku of Naiviqiri Village in Navakasiga, Bua, who, celebrated along with 57 other civil servants, his 29 years of exemplary service in government.
Today, the civil servants were recognised during an investiture ceremony presided by His Excellency the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House, for their distinguished devotion to duty and outstanding achievements.
For Mr Katonivualiku, spending 29 years in the civil service, rising through the ranks from a humble clerical officer to his current position as Senior Information and Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, is a blessing.
“I started with the Ministry of Lands in 1995 and moved to the Government Supplies in 2002. I then joined the Office of the Prime Minister at its Strategic Framework for Change Coordinating Office,” said the father-of-one.
“Even though my years of service was marked by long hours, travelling to rural and outer islands, and meeting people from all walks of life, I can honestly say that it has been a wonderful journey.
“Being a civil servant has been rewarding as I get to meet and provide government services to people at grassroots level up to the executive level.”
Now, as a senior officer, Mr Katonivualiku oversees the critical function of the OPM’s client services and public relations unit, a role that demands not only skill but also a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of the public.
His work ensures that vital information reaches the people of Fiji accurately and efficiently, serving members of the public, and ensuring transparency and trust between the government and the citizens of Fiji.
Despite his professional achievements, Mr Katonivualiku remains a humble man, attributing much of his success to his family, especially his wife Catherine.
“I want to sincerely convey my gratitude to my wife Catherine. She has been my rock and faithful supporter,” Mr Katonivualiku said with a smile.
“I am also thankful to the government for it is through this employment that I am able to buy a land and build a house, as well as a car. Life has been made easier for me and I am thankful for this opportunity.
“I have worked and witnessed government transform over the years and I am honoured to be part of this journey in the civil service. Vinaha vahalevu Fiji Government.”
