Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka launched the National Diabetes Campaign 2024 earlier this evening, highlighting the Coalition Government’s commitment to addressing one of our greatest health challenges-diabetes-a silent killer that impacts thousands of lives.
During the launch, the Prime Minister stated that around 80% of deaths in Fiji are caused by diabetes and other NCDs, and these numbers are rising.
“People and communities must take full ownership of their health and well-being,” he urged.
“The ultimate aim of this campaign is to bring diabetes awareness and early detection to the forefront of our communities.
“In collaboration with media partners, business houses, and local communities, the campaign will ensure that diabetes awareness reaches every corner of the nation.”
The campaign will offer primary health screenings for early diagnosis and intervention, which is crucial for controlling and preventing the harmful effects of diabetes.
“I urge every Fijian to seize the opportunity to get screened for diabetes. Do not wait until it is too late.”
For nine-year-old Namish Chaudhry, diabetes is another health condition that we can overcome.
He urges people living with diabetes to stay strong and never give up on life.
Diagnosed with Type One diabetes in 2017, the eldest of two thought that this was the end of the road for him.
However, with the support of his parents and healthcare professionals, he was able to manage his condition and continue living a normal life.
“I learned how to inject myself everyday. There are days where I have to prick myself several times a day but I have learned to look after myself over the years,” he said.
“Every morning, I check my blood glucose and take in insulin. Sometimes, it’s quite difficult as I also have to watch my diet.
“I thank my parents, school teachers and friends for their support. I am doing well and I can do everything I love to do but I plan it differently because of my health condition.
“This is part of who I am but it does not define me as I have become stronger everyday. I am not giving up and I urge all those living with diabetes to never give up. We are in this together.”
