Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka was accorded a traditional mamasa ceremony upon his arrival on the island of Rotuma this morning.
The Prime Minister is in Rotuma to officiate the 144th anniversary celebrations of Rotuma Day.
The mamasa is a traditional Rotuman ceremony of welcome that signifies cleansing and blessings for visitors who visit the island.
Rooted in Rotuman culture and tradition, it is performed to express gratitude for a safe journey and also a sign of deep respect and honour, reserved for distinguished guests.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the honour bestowed upon him.
Held at the Ahau Government Station, the mamasa was performed by the women, elders and traditional leaders of the seven districts on the island.
