Students of Naloto District School will now have access to clean drinking water following the commissioning of a new piped water system by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
The project, which cost $3,726.15, was funded by the Office of the Prime Minister under the Small Grants Scheme, after the school requested assistance.
In his address to the students and members of the big farming community in Toge, inland from Ba town, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted that access to clean water and sanitation is recognised by the United Nations as a basic human right—fundamental to everyone’s health, dignity, and prosperity.
“With the new water system, students won’t have to drink from water tanks but rather access clean water from proper piped taps,” he said.
The need for a secure water supply became critical after the community’s water source was contaminated.
In its response, the Water Authority of Fiji had to cart water to the school and surrounding villages to ensure residents had access to clean water.
Speaking on behalf of the Tui Naloto, Ratu Jone Naqiri, his traditional herald thanked the Government for its dedication and commitment to ensuring that future generations in Naloto have access to safe, clean and reliable water.
Naloto District School currently caters to 114 students from early childhood to primary school levels.
