Prime Minister, the Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka met with members of the Fijian diaspora in Canberra earlier this week where he updated them on the Coalition Government’s national development plans and progress.
The meeting was attended by Fijians and well-wishers who congregated to hear from the Prime Minister and share their perspectives on developments back home.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged the tremendous contributions of Fijians overseas, in strengthening Fiji’s economy through remittances.
He noted that these remittances are not only a lifeline for many households but also an important driver of growth.
For this, Prime Minister Rabuka also reaffirmed the government’s commitment and deepening engagement with overseas Fijians and the important role that they play in national development not only through remittances but also knowledge exchange, advocacy and investment.
The Prime Minister encouraged further engagement from the diaspora, welcoming ideas and investment that can help push forward Fiji’s future.
He concluded by encouraging those in attendance to be good residents and citizens of Australia.
Meanwhile, the meeting also provided an opportunity for the three Ministers and Permanent Secretaries to interact with the diaspora, informing them about Fiji’s fight against drugs and policing efforts, economy, trade and investment opportunities, immigration and border issues, developments as well as security and defence cooperation, to name a few.
