The Government of Fiji issues this statement to clarify Fiji’s position following public discussion of recent remarks by the Hon Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on the Ocean of Peace.
Fiji’s foreign policy is guided by neutrality, respect for international law, and a commitment to peace.
Fiji has maintained longstanding diplomatic relations with Israel while also supporting the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
The Government reaffirms its support for a peaceful two-state solution where both Israelis and Palestinians can live in dignity and security.
Fiji condemns all forms of violence against civilians and stands with the international community in calling for humanitarian relief for those affected.
The Prime Minister’s “Ocean of Peace” initiative reflects Fiji’s vision of the Pacific as a region free from conflict and confrontation.
This vision extends beyond our waters: Fiji seeks to encourage dialogue and understanding in global conflicts, including the war in Gaza.
“Peace is not only the absence of war but the assurance that families everywhere can live without fear,” the Prime Minister has said.
The Government acknowledges the concerns expressed by the Pacific Conference of Churches and civil society.
Fiji respects these voices and assures all citizens that its foreign policy decisions are sovereign acts taken in the national interest.
Establishing a mission in Jerusalem or engaging diplomatically with Israel does not mean endorsing war or harm. It is an act of engagement intended to build bridges and promote dialogue.
Prime Minister Rabuka stated: “Our support for any nation is never a sanctioning of violence.
The decision to open our Embassy in Jerusalem was made by the Government of Fiji as a sovereign state, not driven by religious or external pressures. Fiji will always stand for peace, justice, and human dignity.”
He added: “We may hold different views at home, but we are one people with one prayer, and that is for peace. Let us remain united as Fiji shows the world that we can truly be an Ocean of Peace.”
