Access to higher education services has been brought closer to the doorsteps of the entire northern community with the grand opening of the Higher Education Commission Fiji office in Labasa this morning.
The establishment of this HECF Office is a significant step towards ensuring that all Fijians, regardless of their geographical location, have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from the global knowledge economy.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the event, highlighting that higher education is a cornerstone for progress, innovation, and empowerment.
“It not only provides individuals with the knowledge and skills to thrive but also equips entire communities and nations to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world,” the PM stated.
“Beyond our borders, the transformative power of education has shaped the world we live in. For Fiji and the Pacific Islands, the expansion of higher education access, reflects a growing recognition that local empowerment and development are driven by good quality education.”
There are approximately 45 higher education institutions registered under the Fiji Higher Education Commission, with nine located in Vanua Levu: one in Savusavu, one in Taveuni, and seven in the Labasa area.
At the same time, PM Rabuka encouraged the Commission to strengthen partnerships with regional counterparts and foster collaboration to drive collective growth and development.
To the people of the Northern Division, he also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to prioritising education as a cornerstone of our nation’s growth and prosperity.
“I urge every province, every tikina, every village, every community, every family, and every individual to embrace education with the same sense of importance.
“Let us continue to work together, hand in hand, to build a nation where every individual is provided equal footing to thrive and contribute to the betterment of our beloved Fiji,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Education Minister Hon. Aseri Radrodro, Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Heritage and Culture Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, the Assistant Minister for Information Hon. Aliki Bia, traditional leaders in Macuata and senior executives of the Commission were also present at the event.
