A new chapter has begun for the people of Burerua Village in Sawakasa, Tailevu as the long wait for clean, safe and reliable water officially came to an end today (17.11.25).
The village came alive with celebration as Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka commissioned the Burerua Water Project — a milestone that brings dignity, health, and renewed hope to families.
Funded under the Office of the Prime Minister’s Small Grants Scheme, the $37,493.50 project now delivers safe drinking water directly to homes, ending years of hardship for villagers who relied on the nearby river for cooking, washing and daily needs.
Prime Minister Rabuka congratulated the community, emphasising that this achievement reflects the power of partnership.
“When Government and communities work together, we create real change. Today is proof of that,” he said.
Water Authority of Fiji CEO, Mr. Seru Soderberg, highlighted that the project aligns with Government’s commitment to ensure every Fijian has access to clean water.
“This commissioning is a testament to our mission. Safe water means healthier families and stronger communities,” he said, assuring that more villages under similar projects will soon enjoy the same transformation.
For Burerua Women’s Group member Miriama Masitabua, the moment is life-changing. She recalled years of walking to the river, even when it was unsafe, to fetch water for her family.
“Today is a blessing. To see water flowing in our homes is something we only dreamed of,” she shared with joy.
Burerua Village now stands as a proud example of progress, partnership, and the Government’s ongoing commitment to uplifting rural communities across Fiji.
