FIJI GOVERNMENT SIGNS MOU WITH WAITT INSTITUTE TO ADVANCE THE PROTECTION OF OCEAN RESOURCES-(15-02-2023)

The People’s Coalition Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Waitt Institute today to help create a bluer and more sustainable ocean for Fiji.
The US-based institute creates and implements sustainable ocean plans in partnership with committed governments, coalition partners, stakeholders and communities.
Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Climate Change and Ocean, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka said he was honored to be part of the signing ceremony adding, “I’m here to reaffirm what my predecessors have done in committing the Fiji Government into this exercise”.
“We reaffirm our collective commitment in sustainably managing our ocean resources.”
Prime Minister Rabuka also expressed Fiji’s gratitude to the institute for its ongoing commitment to help advance the management of 100 percent of Fiji’s waters and supporting the designation of a 30 percent fully-protected network of marine protected areas.
Institute founder and Chief Executive Officer Mr Ted Waitt said they will continue to assist Fiji in managing its oceans sustainably.
“We reaffirm our commitment to this partnership and we are delighted to be providing technical assistance to the government,” he said.
“We will provide community and stakeholder consultations on ocean management practices and sustainable fisheries as part of this partnership and we look forward to working with the Fiji Government and the local communities.”
Meanwhile, the Fiji Government recognises the importance of our ocean resources, not only as a stimulator for economic and national growth, but for the sustainable livelihoods of our local communities.
