Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka attended the 186th Waitangi Day celebrations in Suva tonight (18:02:2026), reaffirming the strong and longstanding partnership between Fiji and New Zealand.
Observed annually on February 6, Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between representatives of the British Crown and Māori chiefs. The Treaty is widely recognised as New Zealand’s founding document and serves as an important occasion to reflect on the nation’s identity, history, and bicultural heritage.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of Fiji, Chief of Protocol Ms Kiti Temo acknowledged that Fiji and New Zealand are natural partners, noting that New Zealand was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Fiji following its independence in 1970.
She noted that these early engagements laid the foundation for the close friendship and strong bilateral relationship the two countries share today.
The Fiji Government remains committed to working hand-in-hand with New Zealand, guided by mutual respect, enduring friendship, and solidarity.
