Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka today met with Rugby Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Phil Waugh and his delegation in his office to discuss the vital role of rugby union in diplomacy across the Pacific.
The meeting, held ahead of the first-ever Wallaroos-Fijiana Test on Fijian soil at the HFC Bank Stadium tomorrow, also provided an opportunity for both sides to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the relationship between our two nations.
PM Rabuka was joined by the Fiji Rugby Union President, Mr John Sanday and CEO Mr Rovereto Nayacalevu, while Rugby Australia was represented by Mr Waugh, General Manager Women’s Rugby Jilly Collins and Head of Pacific Partnerships, Daniel Millis.
“Your visit today reaffirms the strong and growing partnership between Fiji and Rugby Australia—not just in sport, but in the shared values and aspirations we have for our people,” said PM Rabuka.
“The success of our Drua teams stands as a testament to what can be achieved when nations come together to invest in talent, opportunity, and regional pride.”
Speaking on behalf of Rugby Australia, Mr Waugh said,”I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Prime Minister for the opportunity to discuss the importance of our partnership now and into the future with Fiji”.
“All parties recognise the crucial role rugby union plays in uniting the Pacific diplomatically, economically, and culturally and the importance of deepening the already strong relationship the exists between Fiji and Australia through rugby.
“Rugby Australia and the Australian Government, through the PacificAusSports program, have played a huge role in the success of the Fijian Drua’s men’s and women’s programs and growing the community game.
“Indeed, tomorrow’s historic ‘Vuvale Bowl’ between Fijiana and the Wallaroos in Suva has preceded a week of outstanding community engagements, school visits and meetings that will serve to foster even closer ties between our two unions and nations.
“Our discussions also explored areas for deeper cooperation and engagement between our two countries and Rugby Australia looks forward to evolving those in partnership with our great friends in Fiji.”
Meanwhile, the Fijian Drua men’s side will take on the Reds Team at 2.05pm while the Vodafone Fijiana XV side will take on the Wallaroos Team at 5pm.
