Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we stand today, ki Nadonumai vua na Gone Turaga na Tui Suva and I pay my respects to their Chiefs, past and present, as well as emerging leaders and I acknowledge their enduring role within the Vanua, We are grateful for their custodianship, which allows us to convene on this important occasion.
Duke of Edinburgh International Award
- It gives me great pleasure to be present here this morning as we celebrate the achievements of our young people through the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh International Award (DEIA).
- Established in 1956 by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, the DEIA was introduced to recognise the significant efforts of young people – between the ages of 14 to 24 years – who challenge themselves and commit to the service of others.
- Today we recognize 130 individuals under this prestigious award – in both the Silver and Bronze categories. Your resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to your personal growth have all culminated to this day, setting a precedent of excellence for your peers.
- By reaching this milestone, each of you have demonstrated that you possess the character and the vision to lead our great country in the future. The discipline and spirit of service you have showcased throughout this journey are the very foundations upon which a resilient and prosperous Fiji is built.
Alignment to National Development Priorities
- The DEIA is closely aligned with the strategic vision of Fiji’s National Development Plan through its deliberate emphasis on human capital development, social responsibility, and youth leadership. By cultivating discipline, service, resilience, and practical life skills, the Award contributes directly to the development of capable, values‑driven citizens who are prepared to meet the social, economic, and civic demands of a modern Fiji.
- It complements national priorities by strengthening social cohesion, promoting inclusive participation, and empowering young people as active contributors to sustainable development. In recognising the achievements of Award recipients this morning, we also affirm the vital role of structured youth development initiatives in advancing Fiji’s long‑term national aspirations.
Youth Development
- Youth development continues to remain at the heart of our national agenda. By recognising the critical role each of you, and others like you, play in the socio-economic advancement of our nation, Government is committed to providing the necessary stepping stones and platforms for your success.
- The 2023-2024 Fiji Employment and Unemployment Survey (FEUS) Report indicates that approximately 614,832 individuals comprise of the working-age population, aged 15 years and over. Within this demographic, youth unemployment remains at an alarming 18%.
- These figures reinforce the need and urgency to bridge the gap between education and meaningful participation in the workforce. By intensifying Governments’ efforts to create targeted interventions that enhance employability and entrepreneurial spirit of our young people, we are ensuring that our future workforce is not only prepared for the jobs of today, but also resilient enough to create opportunities of tomorrow.
Global Outlook
- With global uncertainties and the evolving socio-economic landscape continuously challenging our great nation, this award is a signal of hope and a testament to the enduring strength of our youths.
- Domestically, we are also addressing critical issues, including the growing threat of illicit drugs and their impact on communities and young people. In this environment, resilience is no longer optional—it is essential.
- It serves as a reminder to all of us here today that despite these challenges, we continue to remain committed in the spirit of national unity and collective progress. This commitment ensures that we do not merely react to the pressures of the modern world, but instead proactively invest in the character and capabilities of our people.
- It is through our resilience that we will continue to thrive in the face of adversity, ensuring that our progress is never hindered by the obstacles we encounter. By remaining steadfast and unified in our purpose, we will continue to transform these unique challenges into opportunities for growth.
- The Award you will receive today is a reflection of this commitment. It serves as a formal validation of your hard work and the journey you have undertaken to transform challenges into triumphs.
