Bula Vinaka and Good Morning to you all. It is a great pleasure for me to officiate in this momentous occasion of International Customs Day that is celebrated globally under the theme: "Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security,
and Prosperity."
Importance of Efficiency
Customs administrations worldwide have evolved to become the gatekeepers of national borders, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless flow of trade while safeguarding our nations from potential threats.
Today, we gather to acknowledge and celebrate the unwavering commitment of customs services in their mission to uphold efficiency, security, and prosperity.
Efficiency is the cornerstone of modern customs operations. In an era where globalization and technological advancements dictate the pace of trade, customs administrations must continuously adapt to remain competitive and relevant.
Through the adoption of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and data analytics, customs services have streamlined processes, reduced clearance times, and enhanced trade facilitation. We commend the efforts of customs officers who tirelessly work to ensure that our ports and borders operate smoothly, facilitating legitimate trade while
minimising disruptions.
The seamless integration of innovative solutions into customs procedures not only enhances efficiency but also fosters an environment conducive to economic growth.
Border Protection
While efficiency drives economic prosperity, security remains a paramount priority. The ever-evolving nature
of threats, ranging from smuggling and illicit trade to terrorism, necessitates a vigilant and proactive approach
from customs administrations.
By strengthening international collaborations, sharing intelligence, and deploying cutting-edge technologies, customs agencies have fortified their defenses against these threats.
The role of customs in national security cannot be overstated. It is through their meticulous inspections and monitoring that our nations are protected from the influx of contraband, counterfeit goods, and other harmful entities.
Today, we salute the dedication and bravery of customs officers who stand as the first line of defense, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.
Trade Facilitation
Ultimately, the endeavors of customs administrations converge on a single objective: prosperity. By facilitating legitimate trade and ensuring the security of supply chains, custom services lay the groundwork for economic development and prosperity.
The revenue collected through customs duties and taxes forms a substantial portion of national budgets, funding essential public services and infrastructure projects.
Furthermore, the promotion of fair-trade practices and the prevention of market distortions contribute to a level playing field for businesses, fostering a vibrant and competitive economy. The prosperity of our nations is intrinsically linked to the efficiency and security provided by customs services.
As we celebrate International Customs Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting and empowering our customs administrations. The theme;Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity; is not merely a slogan but a testament to the enduring dedication of customs officers around the world.
Alignment to National Development Plan
The National Development Plan (NDP) 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 outlines key aspects of our overall development strategy through trade facilitation, enhancement of border security and economic growth.
The NDP prioritizes economic resilience, people empowerment and good governance and the FRCS plays a crucial role in achieving these goals through efficient customs procedures and compliance initiatives.
Better Collaboration
I urge all stakeholders, from government agencies to the private sector, to collaborate closely with customs administrations, ensuring that they are equipped with the resources and tools necessary to fulfill their crucial mandate.
Together, we can create a future where efficiency, security, and prosperity are not just aspirations but tangible realities.
