Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Home Affairs and Immigration, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka informed Parliament today that a new Community Police Post will be built in Vuna, on the southern part of Taveuni to address yaqona theft on the island.
In his response to an oral question from Opposition MP Hon. Ioane Naivalurua about the Fiji Police Force’s strategic measures to combating the increasing yaqona theft in Taveuni, PM Rabuka said plans are in place to benefit yaqona farmers on the island.
“The police will work closely in collaboration with key stakeholders such as young farmers, state and non-state actors to ensure that yaqona theft in Taveuni is resolved once and for all,” he highlighted.
“As part of the police restructure that was approved in Cabinet in 2018, the force will establish a new Community Post in Vuna, Taveuni to assist in resolving this issue.”
PM Rabuka updated the august House that the police have been implementing strategic measures to control yaqona theft on Taveuni.
These measures include dynamic community engagements, enhanced community engagements, farm visitations and police visitations in red zones, to name just a few.
The PM reassured the House that Government will continue to support yaqona farmers to ensure that they fully reap economic gains from the sale of yaqona, to support the needs of their families.
