Fiji’s commitment to scientific exploration and environmental sustainability will now be further enhanced following the commissioning of the state-of-the-art research vessel, Yau Dikevi in Lami this morning.
The vessel symbolises a significant investment in advancing oceanic research and protecting the nation’s marine resources.
Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka commissioned the vessel, explaining that it is equipped with advanced scientific survey tools.
The vessel will serve as a floating laboratory and a beacon of hope for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
“Though, it may not be large, it has the cutting edge, state-of-the-art equipment to get the job done,” the PM highlighted.
“It will enable our scientists to conduct marine geology and coastal surveys, map the ocean floor, identify vulnerable coastal areas to support climate-affected communities, study tectonic activity, and understand the processes shaping our underwater landscapes.
“These efforts will contribute to global scientific knowledge and enhance our ability to safeguard marine resources for future generations at the national level and possesses significance to be peer reviewed and shared widely.”
The vessel will also benefit the region in certain cases.
This achievement is the result of collaboration between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly Silverstone Pte Ltd.
The PM thanked the staff and management of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their tireless efforts in bringing the vessel to fruition.
“May the research vessel navigate the ocean with purpose, safety, and success, bringing new discoveries, fostering collaboration, and strengthening our resolve to be better stewards of our marine environment,” he concluded.
Following its commissioning, the RV Yau Dikevi embarked on its maiden voyage to Nukulau.
