Business activities in the heart of Rakiraki Town has received a major boost with the official opening of the G.S. Raj Shop Plus Supermarket this morning.
Owned by former politician and business tycoon Mr George Shiu Raj, the $2 million supermarket will employ about 40 people in the area.
Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka officiated at the event, highlighting that the business venture marks a major milestone for the province’s economic and social development.
In his address, Prime Minister Rabuka congratulated Mr. George Shiu Raj and his team for their unwavering vision and dedication, noting Mr. Raj’s outstanding journey from humble beginnings as a sole trader in 1952 to a respected national leader and former Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs.
“The opening of this supermarket is also a reassuring development for our local communities,” said the PM.
“Residents will no longer need to travel or commute extremely long distances, under challenging weather conditions to access basic services as this has been made much more convenient.
“The Government has long recognised the importance of partnering with local communities and stakeholders in advancing our holistic growth and development. As the saying goes “no man is an island” – reflects the interconnectedness and interdependence we have with each other.”
Plans for a second supermarket in the area were also welcomed as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit thriving in Ra.
In closing, Prime Minister Rabuka encouraged reflection on the values of humility, selflessness and sacrifice during Holy Week, while expressing gratitude to Mr. Raj and his team for their contribution to Fiji’s progress.
