Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka last night attended a special reception, marking the 76th Republic Day of India at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel.
The event celebrated India’s cultural ethnic diversity, among other important achievements.
In raising a toast to celebrate the auspicious occasion on behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Chief of Protocol, Ms Kiti Temo highlighted that Fiji and India share a longstanding relationship which is founded on mutual understanding, respect for each other’s sovereignty, common development and shared prosperity.
“This valued relationship will only grow stronger as we commemorate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Fiji and India this year,” she stated.
“Fiji will continue to acknowledge the contributions of indentured laborers who have been a vital component of our society, contributing to socioeconomic development of modern Fiji and providing the rich heritage that has made our nation such a vibrant and robust hub in the Oceania region.
“Fiji looks forward to continued collaboration and deeper engagements with India in areas of mutual interests such as human resource development, climate resilient projects, health and education sector assistance, humanitarian assistance and people-to-people relations.”
Ms Temo concluded her remarks, saying; “This mutually-beneficial endeavors will continue to be progressed through our enhanced partnership, special cultural links, enduring bonds and cooperation that Fiji has shared for generations with India”.
The event was also attended by His Lordship Mr Salesi Temo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Biman Prasad, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua, Opposition Members of Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps and distinguished guests.
