In a poignant ceremony, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) today concluded its eight-month Reconciliation and Restoration Program, aimed at fostering national reconciliation and healing.
Since the inception of the program in March this year, the months-long journey of reflection and reconciliation saw the RFMF officers taking time out to seek forgiveness from families affected by the events of the May 2000 coup.
Today’s ceremony began with a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives 24 years ago, followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” which was presented to the families of eight soldiers who died during the 2000 mutiny.
Some of these soldiers were part of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
His Excellency, the President Ratu Williame Katonivere was also present at the event.
Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka personally led the call for forgiveness, acknowledging the hurt that the events of the past continue to cause within families, communities, and the nation.
The Prime Minister shouldered the blame, and acknowledged that the 2000 and 2006 coups stemmed from the May 14, 1987 coup, which he instigated.
“I began the journey of disobedience. To all commissioned officers and all ranks and your families, I bear the blame and I seek forgiveness from you all,” he said in an emotional tone.
“It is my prayer that the Lord will give you peace and the strength to forgive me and all those who wrongfully obeyed my orders and instructions in the 1987 coup.
“By seeking forgiveness, we acknowledge that true peace in our nation comes from honoring each other’s experiences.”
Also in attendance were senior officers of the RFMF, Fiji Police Force, Republic of Fiji Navy, Fiji Corrections Service and retired soldiers and well-wishers across the board.
The ceremony bore a renewed commitment to ending the “coup culture” in Fiji.
The Reconciliation and Restoration program was aimed at bridging divisions and renewing trust within the RFMF and the wider community, reaffirming a commitment to common growth and national progress.
