Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka is in Sydney, Australia, where he joined members of the Fijian community in Granville for a special church service commemorating 190 years since the arrival of Christianity in Fiji.
On 12 October 1835, the first Wesleyan Methodist missionaries, William Cross and David Cargill, arrived at Tubou, Lakeba, bringing with them the message of God’s love and hope. Their arrival marked a defining moment in Fiji’s history — one that transformed our nation and shaped the values we hold dear today.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister paid tribute to our forefathers for embracing Christianity and laying the foundation for a Fiji built on faith, peace, compassion, and unity. He reflected that Christianity did not just introduce a new religion; it brought about a new way of life that continues to strengthen our families and communities.
Speaking to the congregation, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasised that Fiji must always choose peace — reminding all that the same spirit which transformed our ancestors should continue to guide our actions and relationships as a nation.
He also highlighted the Ocean of Peace Declaration, a vision for the Pacific region grounded in unity, compassion, and shared humanity, noting that our ocean must always connect us, not divide us.
The Prime Minister thanked the Sydney Methodist Division for their warm welcome, the traditional ceremony of thanksgiving, and their continued commitment to faith and fellowship.
