Today, the Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka joined traditional leaders and distinguished guests for a laid wreath-laying ceremony at the Rotuman Monument in Motusa Village to commemorate the 144th anniversary of Rotuma’s cession to Great Britain on May 13, 1881.
The event was part of the Rotuma Day celebrations.
During the solemn ceremony, the Prime Minister laid a wreath in honour of the enduring legacy and contributions of past Rotuman leaders to the island’s development and cultural heritage.
Prime Minister Rabuka reflected on the strength, wisdom, and leadership shown by Rotuman pioneers who paved the way for unity and progress in their communities.
“This wreath is a symbol of our respect, our gratitude, and our shared commitment to uphold the values they stood for,” he said.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”
The event was also attended by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, his Assistant Minister Hon. Jovesa Vocea, Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Mr Peter Roberts, Korean Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency, Mr Jin Hyung Kim, the UN Deputy Resident Representative Mr Abduvakkos Abdurahmanov and senior government officials.
