Introduction
Before I begin, I wish to first acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we stand today. Ki na Vanua o Muaivuso vua na Turaga na Rokobaleni.
We pay our respects to their elders – past, present, and emerging, and recognise their enduring connection to the land, sea, and culture.
Today marks a joyous occasion for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources – and a promising moment for
Government. I say promising because science and innovation have consistently been the cornerstones of progress for many nations around the world.
It is with immense pride and gratitude to be amongst you all this morning to commission this “state of the art” research
vessel. This vessel represents more than just a vessel, it symbolises the foresight and visionary commitment of your government.
This moment marks a significant milestone in our journey to deepen our understanding of the ocean – one of the most vital and mysterious elements of our planet.
As I reviewed my schedule for the week, I noted today’s event and found myself curious about the areas of study being explored globally that we have not studied or researched.
It was interesting to note the significant contribution of the global ocean economy, measured in terms of ocean-based contributions:
According to the preliminary calculations of Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the value of the Ocean Economy’s output in 2010 is US$1.5 trillion.
Recent global estimates suggests that the value of the Global Ocean Economy now ranges between $3 trillion and $6 trillion annually, contributing to about 260 million jobs to the global economy.
While we ponder over the great value and contribution our ocean has, it is sad to note the issue of marine pollution, particularly on plastic waste, which continues to escalate.
Plastic pollution in our marine environment is estimated to have significant economic damage to around $13 billion annually, affecting industries such as fisheries, tourism and livelihoods of our ordinary population.
As we launch this vessel today, we renew our commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and the protection of our marine ecosystems, part of which is also the interconnectivity to traditional knowledge.
Although the ocean covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface, it remains largely unexplored, holding secrets that
may unlock solutions to some of humanity’s greatest challenges, from climate change to sustainable resource management.
Ladies & Gentlemen, equipped with advanced scientific survey tools, this vessel will serve as a floating laboratory and a beacon of hope.
Though, it may not be large, it has the cutting edge, state of the art equipment to get the job done.
It will enable our scientists to conduct marine geology and coastal surveys, map the ocean floor, identify vulnerable coastal areas to support climate-affected communities, study tectonic activity, and understand the processes shaping our
underwater landscapes.
These efforts will contribute to global scientific knowledge and enhance our ability to safeguard marine resources for
future generations at the national level and possesses significance to be peer reviewed and shared widely.
I am happy that this will not only benefit Fiji, but also the region in certain cases.
This achievement is the result of collaboration between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly Silverstone Pte Ltd.
To all who worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality, especially the staff of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources and the Minister, I extend my heartfelt gratitude.
Your dedication reminds us that great things are possible when we work together.
I am particularly inspired by the role this vessel will play in empowering our young scientists. It is not just a vessel – it is a classroom, a training ground, and a bridge to the future.
It will spark curiosity, nurture innovation, and prepare the next generation of marine geologists, oceanographers, and environmentalists to tackle the challenges ahead.
As we commission this vessel today, let us embrace the responsibility it represents. May it sail not only as a tool for
discovery but also as a symbol of our unwavering commitment to protecting and preserving the ocean’s wealth.
Let it remind us that science and exploration are pathways to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
In closing, I commend everyone who contributed to this monumental project.
May the research vessel navigate the ocean with purpose, safety, and success, bringing new discoveries, fostering
collaboration, and strengthening our resolve to be better stewards of our marine environment.
With great honour and hope, I now declare the Research Vessel Yau Dikevi officially commissioned and ready to embark
on its journey of exploration and discovery.
