Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka visited the headquarters of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) at Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan, yesterday to explore pioneering advances in sustainable agriculture and to lay the groundwork for meaningful knowledge exchange between Fiji and Japan.
Upon arrival, he was welcomed by the NARO executives and later received a briefing on the operations of the world-class research organization.
He later toured the organization’s key research facilities which focus on precision agriculture, robotics, climate-smart farming, and genetic resources.
Discussions focused on how Fiji can collaborate with Japan to bolster food security and agricultural resilience, among other important initiatives.
NARO acts as Japan’s premier national institute for agricultural, food and environmental research.
In his remarks, PM Rabuka praised NARO for its efforts in revolutionising the agriculture sector.
“I am really impressed with what I have seen here today. Visiting NARO has shown us that even in challenging conditions, when innovation, data and resilience are brought together, agriculture can become a sustainable, competitive, and climate-smart industry,” he said.
The Government of Fiji remains committed to transforming its agricultural sector, raising productivity, sustainability, and resilience, while ensuring inclusive growth and export competitiveness.
The visit reflects the priority placed on innovation, international partnership, and knowledge-sharing.
