His Excellency the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, tonight hosted a reception which included the Beating of the Retreat ceremony to conclude the celebrations for the life of the late Statesman, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna.
In addressing the nation earlier today, His Excellency, President Katonivere said that over the last seven days, Fiji witnessed the re-birth of Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna’s legacy.
“To fully appreciate the enormity of the work that Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna had to undertake we need to engage the relevant apparatus of Government, particularly our education system, and our traditional institutions to embed and teach Ratu Sukuna’s legacy,” President Katonivere said.
“We need to learn from Ratu Sukuna’s life to help chart our nation’s course. A life of safeguarding the iTaukei – their land, sea and natural resources, their economy, their education, and their culture. A life fostering peaceful living with other races. And a life of availing iTaukei land for the country’s economic development.”
The reception was attended by the Head of Government; Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Mrs Rabuka, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests.
