A State Reception was held this evening at the State House to commemorate Fiji’s 55th Independence Anniversary, marking the conclusion of a week-long celebration of Fiji Day.
The event was hosted by the Acting President, Chief Justice Salesi Temo, and attended by the Prime Minister, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from regional organisations, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies, and community leaders.
The highlight of the evening was the “Beating of the Retreat”, a traditional military ceremony with origins dating back to 17th-century England.
In keeping with this tradition, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) conducted the ceremony at the Coronation Ground within the State House premises. The rhythmic precision of the military band and the solemn atmosphere reflected both national pride and respect for Fiji’s journey since independence in 1970.
The Beating of the Retreat marked the formal conclusion of Fiji Day celebrations, symbolising unity, discipline, and reflection on the nation’s achievements over the past 55 years.
The evening concluded with a traditional toast in honour of Fiji’s independence and its continued commitment to peace, progress, and national unity.
