The new project further strengthens Fiji’s telecommunication infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and improving access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and business opportunities in the Northern Division.
Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Public Enterprises Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted that reliable communication connectivity is essential for economic growth, education, and disaster resilience.
“The ceremony marks a milestone for the people of Vanua Levu and Fiji’s backbone network capacity provider – Telecom, in reinforcing high speed, resilient and scalable connectivity between Savusavu and Labasaand more-so, a giant leap forward for Fiji, in our shared aspirations for a more connected and prosperous future,” said the PM.
The fiber optic extension project is part of Telecom Fiji’s five-year fiber investment plan and represents a $10 million commitment to improving Fiji’s digital infrastructure.
The Prime Minister commended Telecom Fiji and its project partners for their leadership and collaboration in delivering this critical infrastructure.
With this new development, PM Rabuka also encouraged all Fijians to use digital connectivity responsibly to support Fiji’s growth and prosperity.
The project consists of two phases; the first phase covers the fiber route from Labasa to Seaqaqa, and the second phase extends from Seaqaqa to Savusavu fiber route, which connects to the Savusavu Cable Landing Station.
The project underscores the Coalition Government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that even our most remote communities, have access to the opportunities that digital connectivity provides.
